The Citi Custom Cash card solves the activation-fatigue problem that comes with rotating- category cards like Discover It Cash Back and Chase Freedom Flex. You do not pre-declare a category. You do not activate anything quarterly. The card simply identifies whichever of its 10 eligible categories you spent most in during the billing cycle, then applies the 5 percent rate retroactively up to a $500 cap. Combined with the 15-month 0% APR intro period and the integration into the broader Citi ThankYou Points ecosystem, Custom Cash is the closest thing to a set-and-forget 5 percent cashback card available.

The 10 categories that can earn 5%
The 5 percent rate auto-applies to whichever of these categories had the most spending in a given billing cycle. You do not choose; the card chooses based on your actual spend. Categories outside this list earn 1 percent.

Yield at common spend levels
The $500 cap is monthly, not quarterly. So even small consistent monthly spending in an eligible category produces meaningful cashback. The table below assumes the named amount is all spent in the single highest-category for that month.
| Top category spend | Cashback that month | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| $300 in top category | $15 (5%) | $15 monthly |
| $500 (cap) in top category | $25 (5%) | $25 monthly |
| $800 in top category | $25 (cap) + $3 (1% over) | $28 monthly |
| $1,200 in top category | $25 (cap) + $7 (1% over) | $32 monthly |
When Custom Cash unlocks transfer value
Custom Cash earnings nominally show as cashback (1 cent per point), but the underlying currency is Citi ThankYou Points. If you also hold Citi Premier ($95 annual fee) or a higher-tier paid Citi card with ThankYou Points access, you can pool your Custom Cash earnings with the paid card's points and transfer them to airline and hotel partners at 1:1 ratios.
Common Citi transfer partners include Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Singapore KrisFlyer, Turkish Miles & Smiles, Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and others. Premium-cabin redemptions on these partners often value points at 1.5 to 2.5 cents each, which effectively converts your Custom Cash 5 percent cashback into 7.5 to 12.5 percent transfer-redemption value. This requires the paid Citi card and familiarity with award booking; for travellers, the ecosystem is competitive with Chase Ultimate Rewards on partner coverage.
Three ideal Custom Cash applicants
The set-and-forget 5% earner
You want 5 percent cashback without managing quarterly activations or pre-declaring categories. Custom Cash auto-rotates to whatever you spend most in each month, so the card works passively. For applicants who would otherwise forget to activate Discover It or Chase Flex each quarter, Custom Cash captures the same 5 percent rate without the activation overhead.
The variable-spend household
Your monthly spending pattern shifts. Some months it is grocery-heavy, some months gas-heavy, some months restaurant-heavy. Custom Cash adapts to whichever category leads in any given month, so you capture 5 percent consistently even as your spending profile changes. Cards with pre-declared categories (Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards) require you to predict which category will lead, which Custom Cash makes unnecessary.
The Citi ecosystem builder
You hold or plan to hold Citi Premier or another ThankYou-eligible paid Citi card. Custom Cash becomes your high-rate earner; the paid card unlocks transfer-partner value. The combination produces effective per-dollar value comparable to the Chase Ultimate Rewards stack, with different partner coverage that may better fit certain travel patterns.
When to look elsewhere
- You spend heavily in categories outside the eligible list (e.g. high spending on Amazon or general online retail outside of streaming and drugstores). Custom Cash earns 1 percent on those; a card with the right category bonus will outperform.
- You spend over $500 monthly in your top category consistently. The cap limits Custom Cash to $25 per month at 5 percent; a card with a higher monthly or quarterly cap captures more of the bonus rate.
- You need a longer 0% APR runway than 15 months. The 15-month intro is on the shorter side; longer-runway cards (Wells Fargo Reflect at 21 months, Citi Diamond Preferred at 21 BT) sacrifice the rewards for the longer window.
- Your existing BT source is a Citi card. Citi does not permit cross-Citi BT, so the BT angle of Custom Cash does not apply.
Maximising approval odds
- Use Citi pre-qualification first. Soft pull, returns the offer you would likely receive. Custom Cash is one of the more approval-friendly Citi cards, so pre-qual results are usually reliable.
- Time the application for a high-spend month. Welcome offers usually require $1,500 in spend within 6 months. Apply when you have a known large purchase coming up so the spend requirement is easy to hit.
- Watch for Citi application restrictions. Citi limits applicants to one new card every 8 days and two new cards every 65 days. If you have applied for another Citi card recently, wait the required window before applying for Custom Cash.
- Pay utilisation under 10 percent before applying. Standard advice that applies to all credit card applications; this single move often lifts FICO by 20 to 30 points and improves the approval odds.
