Why a longer runway is not always better
Rewards versus runway
The longest-runway cards (24 months) typically have no rewards. A 15 month runway card with 1.5 to 2 percent cashback can return $300 to $600 on a $20,000 wedding spend you can clear in 14 months. Run our calculator to compare the rewards earned against the interest cost of clearing the same balance over a longer window.
Credit score gating
Tier 1 cards (around 24 months) generally need FICO 720 or above. Tier 2 (21 months) tends to need 700+. If you are sitting at 680, you can probably get an 18 month card today; waiting six months to push your score above 700 might unlock a 21 month card later.
Penalty APR
Some long-runway cards reserve the right to revoke the 0% promo on a single missed payment. Others (the Simplicity is the canonical example) have no penalty APR. If you are worried about life getting in the way, prioritise a card with no penalty APR over one with a slightly longer runway.
